Julia Lindemalm began photographing zoos in 2011. Since then she’s visited twelve zoos in Europe and the United States, returning to the same cages over and over again. But the geographical location isn’t important. Zoo World addresses the question of zoos from an existential perspective – it’s about our relationship to the world we live in, our unrequited love for the animals, our consumption of the world’s resources, and the power we have given ourselves. As the years have passed, this work has become a documentation. Cages are being rebuilt and more and more critical voices are being heard. Perhaps these photographs might soon be a record of a bygone era.
